Evergreen Refreshments began with a single vending machine and a big idea. In 1976, Jim Brinton—now Founder and CEO—entered the food service industry with a clear vision: to rethink the way people experience their breakroom. At a time when vending machines were often seen as a last resort for snacks, Jim saw an opportunity to create something better. His entrepreneurial spirit, relentless curiosity, and passion for service quickly set him apart as a trailblazer in the industry.
What started as a vending service in the Seattle area steadily evolved into something far more innovative. Jim recognized early on that workplaces were changing. Employees were expecting more from their employers—more convenience, more variety, and more thoughtful workplace amenities. He responded by expanding Evergreen’s services beyond traditional vending to include premium office coffee solutions, pantry programs, and most notably, the micro market concept.
The first micro market Jim launched was placed at a local Seattle news station—a bold experiment at the time. Unlike vending machines, this setup offered an open, self-serve retail space with fresh food, snacks, and beverages available 24/7. The response was overwhelmingly positive, confirming Jim’s belief that the future of breakroom service was about experience, not just access.
From that single location, Evergreen Refreshments grew rapidly. Today, we operate over 1,000 micro markets and serve companies across the Pacific Northwest, including Seattle, Tumwater, and Portland. Yet despite our growth, we’ve remained deeply connected to our local roots. Evergreen is proud to be a locally-owned and operated business, and we continue to prioritize personalized service and long-term relationships with every client.
